Washington, D.C. — Rep. Donald M. Payne, Jr. issued the following statement today regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn a New York gun control law. The law had been in place for more than 100 years and restricted the use of handguns outside of the home. It required residents to show “proper cause” regarding why they should be allowed to carry handguns in public. The Supreme Court decision rejected that premise and said Americans should not be prohibited from carrying firearms in public.
“This decision makes no sense to anyone who wants to live in a peaceful society. Gun violence is one of the most preventable forms of death in our country. Instead of limiting the ability of criminals and domestic terrorists to obtain handguns, the Supreme Court has opened the door to allow even more mass shootings and terrorist incidents. I have said countless times that we must stop this insanity and obsession America has with guns and mass shootings. Gun violence is killing children and teachers in schools, workers in the workplace, and Americans who are grocery shopping. Americans are at risk of being the victims of gun violence when they go to church or other religious services. It is outrageous. Right now, we are about to pass a bipartisan, common-sense gun control law to restrict violent criminals and domestic terrorists from getting guns as well as protect children in schools. Now, the Supreme Court has decided to move in the opposite direction and turn America into the Wild West. It makes no sense at all.”
