24 June 2022 – Thrive by Five has welcomed media reports today that NSW Opposition Leader Chris Minns has promised to fast-track the delivery of one free year of preschool for four year olds if Labor is elected in March next year.

The Opposition Leader’s budget reply speech also outlined a plan for 100 new primary school places in the state in its first four years of office.

Thrive by Five Director Jay Weatherill said, “The NSW Opposition Leader should be congratulated for his commitment to bipartisan support for free early learning for four-year-olds and increasing the availability of early childhood education and care.

“There is now a surging wave of momentum for early learning reform from political leaders from both sides of the political divide and all levels of government, including recent announcements in NSW and Victoria.

“There has been an additional $25 billion committed to early childhood education and care by the Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Federal governments in recent weeks.

“As important as the massive financial investment, is the acknowledgement that the early learning system is not currently working for children, women and families and it is a government priority to fix it.

“Early learning reform is an ambitious and nation-building agenda. Thrive by Five welcomes the discussion of early learning at last week’s meeting of National Cabinet and looks forward to continuing collaboration between the Federal government and states on achieving real change.

“It’s vital we support women, children and families and underpin a healthy economy with universally accessible, high-quality and affordable early learning, paid parental leave and better pay and conditions for early educators.

“The time is now for bipartisan and government co-operation for a once-in-a-generation reform of early learning and the investment needed to make it happen,” he said.
