The southwestern city of Chongqing has kicked off a campaign allowing people the chance to win wetland plants, with the aim of promoting China’s new law on wetland protection.
According to the local government, internet users need to take a quiz on June 1 and June 2 to earn points, with the first 1,000 eligible respondents then receiving plants from Chongqing’s 22 national wetland parks. The winners will be announced on June 3.
At present, the municipality has created 10 wetland nature reserves, a nature reserve for rare and unique fish, 26 national and local-level wetland parks, and three key municipal wetlands, which jointly form a wetland protection system.
Wetlands perform a variety of important functions, including water conservation and purification, flood storage, drought prevention, climate regulation and biodiversity maintenance. The law on wetland protection takes effect on June 1, and is the first specialized legislation in the field in China.
