Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, and Global Human Rights issued the following statement:

“Yesterday, the Federal Parliament of Somalia elected Hassan Sheikh Mohamud as the nation’s next president. While the election was long-overdue, successfully choosing the president through an indirect election in accordance with the Somali constitution was a necessary first step in pursuit of democratic accountability. I remain hopeful that progress can be made soon toward ensuring election integrity and a one-person one-vote model of universal suffrage in presidential elections. I am optimistic that President Mohamud can deliver the leadership that Somalia needs in this moment, promoting democratization and socioeconomic development, abating ongoing violent conflicts, and addressing rampant food insecurity caused by the worst drought in recent memory.”
