MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – The EU: global hub of paedophilia – E-001656/2022

Source: European Parliament

In its latest report, published on Tuesday 26 April 2022, the Internet Watch Foundation made a shattering revelation: the European Union, and the Netherlands in particular, has become the global hub for hosting online child pornography. According to this telling report, 62 % of all content of this kind is hosted in the EU, making our continent an Eldorado for the world’s paedophiles.

The excellent infrastructure available in Europe (high-speed internet, low hosting costs), lenient legal frameworks of some Member States and lack of response from the EU may explain this worrying phenomenon. It is indeed currently very difficult to check the content of personal clouds or encrypted messages without infringing privacy and data protection rules.

The Commission will soon present a set of proposals to address this thorny issue.

In view of this, I would like to ask the Commission:

1. How it will put an end to online paedophilia while still ensuring the protection of European citizens’ personal data?

2. Whether it will challenge the encryption of data despite the fact that it guarantees their integrity?
