Headline: Proton Therapy: A success story that began 25 years ago

On November 25, 1996, the Center for Proton Therapy at the Paul Scherrer Institute PSI treated a cancer patient for the first time with the so-called spot scanning technique – a world premiere. This type of radiation, developed at PSI, scans deep-lying tumors with a pencil-thin beam of charged particles. In this way, the cancer cells are killed in a targeted manner, but the surrounding healthy tissue is spared. In the meantime, the technology has established itself worldwide, and at PSI alone, around 2000 cancer patients have been irradiated with it since 1996, over a third of them children and adolescents. It is no coincidence that the success story began at PSI of all places.
