The Canton of Neuchâtel has more than 5,400 apprenticeship contracts in progress, including 4,224 in dual mode. This new record increases the dualisation rate by 2.8 points for a total of 78.2%. The measures taken by all the partners in vocational training in the Canton of Neuchâtel continue to support the dynamism of the apprenticeship market and express the Canton’s desire to continue to promote this training route.

These good results are accompanied by several positive indicators. In 2020, 642 certificates for in-company trainer courses were issued. This figure, never before reached, reveals the strong commitment of the training companies to support the next generation. Finally, the certification rate of 90.5%, for AFP and CFC titles, attests to the quality of the supervision of apprentices under Neuchâtel contract in the three training sites (companies, vocational schools and inter-company courses).

The prospects for the apprenticeship market, supported by organizations from the world of work (OrTra), the business community and the Canton, are encouraging. The training contract, fed by a levy from all Neuchâtel employers and entered into force in January 2020, is bearing fruit. This redistributes 5,000 francs on average, per apprentice, to the training companies. In addition, the Neuchâtel Vocational Training Center (CPNE), which will be effective at the start of the 2022 school year and fully integrated in 2025, will improve the clarity of the training system and enhance agility in the face of a constantly changing world of work. Finally, adaptations to the training system in IT, health-social and biopharmaceutical fields allow new courses in important economic sectors. In terms of numbers, 5,792 students are currently undergoing initial vocational training (AFP or CFC with or without a vocational diploma), of which 2,294 are in the first year.

Vocational and academic education in the digital age The Canton’s involvement in digital education makes post-compulsory training consistent with the world of work and subsequent training. The start of the 2021 school year for the gymnasium course is marked in particular by the teaching of computer science, with two weekly periods in the first year. Professional training, particularly through the BYOD / AVEC system (bring your personal communication equipment) and various training reviews, is also engaged in digital education. Also, the infrastructure and equipment of vocational schools and high schools are in full development. By 2026, more than 600 additional new classrooms will be equipped with the necessary tools (mobile equipment) to integrate digital technologies into education.

Academic training called to harmonize The Swiss Conference of Cantonal Directors of Public Education (CDIP) aims to develop gymnasium maturity. For the Canton, several axes will become concrete by 2031, such as the minimum and harmonized duration of 4 years and the revision of the framework study plan (PEC). In terms of numbers, 2,573 students are currently following general training (gymnasium or specialized maturity and general culture school certificate), of which 936 are in first year. Note also the taste of high school students in Neuchâtel for scientific branches: 50% of them choose the specific options “Biology and chemistry” and “Physics and application of mathematics”.

Detailed information is available in the documents published by the post-compulsory training and guidance service (SFPO): Compendium of initial vocational training 2021-2022, as well as the brochure Guidance for students released in 2021.
