Press Release

Washington, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (OH-09) released the following statement after the House voted to raise the nation’s debt ceiling and avoid a catastrophic default. Today’s passage of the debt ceiling increase does not authorize additional spending. Instead, it ensures that the U.S. Department of the Treasury can pay for spending that was already authorized – 97 percent of which was incurred prior to President Biden taking office. Every Democrat voted to raise the debt ceiling to cover this spending, while Republicans were unanimous in their opposition.

“After racking up trillions of dollars in debt and giving away tax cuts to the wealthiest few – Republicans have decided they do not want to pay their bills and are willing to derail the nation’s economy in the process. Not only would they delay Social Security payments to our seniors, they would also withhold pay from our servicemembers. This is unconscionable. As Democrats work to deliver historic investments in Middle Class jobs and the infrastructure improvements our communities need, we invite our Republican colleagues to end their theatrics and get to work on behalf of the American people.”
