Washington, D.C.—U.S. Senator Susan Collins, a senior member of the powerful Senate Appropriations Committee, announced today that she secured $850,000 to support the construction of a York County emergency operations center in the draft Fiscal Year 2022 Homeland Security Appropriations bill that has been released by the Senate Appropriations Committee. The legislation must still be voted upon by the full Senate and House.
“With natural disasters increasing in frequency and intensity, it is critical that Maine has the necessary resources to respond in order to protect public safety, property, and our economy,” said Senator Collins. “As the appropriations process moves forward, I will continue to champion this investment, which would improve disaster preparedness and response operations in York County, helping to protect families and local communities.”
If the Fiscal Year 2022 Homeland Security Appropriations bill is enacted into law, the York County Emergency Management Agency would use this funding Senator Collins requested to support the construction of a Strategic Coordinating Center/Emergency Operations Center.  In addition to serving as a regional training facility, the center will improve disaster preparedness and response by providing a logistics planning and resource management area for emergency operations.  There is currently no adequate site in southern Maine for training and rehearsal for firefighting, HAZMAT response, emergency vehicle operations, law enforcement, and emergency medical services.
