Women in Jersey are being encouraged to speak up about their worries this Menopause Awareness Month.

The International Menopause Society (IMS) has collaborated with the World Health Organisation (WHO) to use October as a month to raise awareness of the menopause and outline support options that are available to women.

Consultant Obstetrician & Gynaecologist at Health and Community Services, Dr Fiona Nelson, said: “The menopause can be a very debilitating time for women. I urge women to speak to family and friends and raise any of their worries with their GPs. Employers should also be aware of this issue and be sympathetic to it.

“As gynaecologists, we are more than happy to speak to women about any problems and offer support where needed.

“There are a number of self-help measures that women can try initially including moderate exercise, following healthy eating patterns, and cutting down on alcohol and caffeine. In addition, there are many useful online resources, such as Menopause Matters, or The British Menopause Society.”

Any woman that wants to discuss their concerns should contact their GP in the first instance.
