“No time to die”, directed by Carey Fukunaga (2021). UK, USA, 12+

The premiere of the new James Bond film has been postponed several times since April 2020. This is the 25th Bond film and the fifth (and final) starring Daniel Craig, who played the legendary 007 for 15 years. With his participation were filmed “Casino Royale”, “Quantum of Solace”, “Coordinates” Skyfall “” and “Spectrum”. On the eve of the premiere of No Time to Die, the Royal Navy of Great Britain awarded the actor the title of honorary commander for his impeccable service in the role of Bond.

In the new film, Agent 007 resigns, changes his tuxedo to swimming trunks and goes to wallow in the sun with his beloved Madeleine Swann (Lea Seydoux), who appeared in Spectra connected by plot and characters). The holiday idyll is interrupted by villains from the past. Bond, convinced that his girlfriend has betrayed him, flees to Jamaica. Five years later, he was called back to the service. Only he can cope with a villain named Lucifer Safin (Rami Malek), who possesses a deadly biological weapon. Meanwhile, Agent Nomi (Lashana Lynch) took Bond’s place in MI6.

The signature Bond cocktail contains all the usual ingredients: spectacular chases and fights, the latest technology, global villains and gorgeous women. True, this time Bond behaves in a very restrained and correct manner towards the latter. Even the delightful contact Paloma (Ana de Armas) doesn’t make him hesitate.

The credits of the film are full of stars, and it’s not just about the actors. Phoebe Waller-Bridge (TV series “Trash”) had a hand in the script, Billie Eilish sang the title song, and the music was written by Hans Zimmer (“Inception”, “Interstellar”, “Dune”). Directed by Carey Fukunaga, known for the film “Rootless Beasts” and the TV series “True Detective” and “Maniac”.

“Superstar”, directed by Bruno Dumont (2021). France, Germany, Italy, Belgium, 16+

And again Lea Seydoux, now in the role of the ambitious journalist France de Mer, who is not afraid of hot spots, inconvenient topics, or the mighty of this world. France becomes a real superstar and gets her own show on the country’s main channel. She herself shoots reports, often about the poor and unfairly deprived, but at the same time she goes to dinner parties in expensive outfits and buys up works of art. Despite the money and fame, the star suffers from constant breakdowns. One day she will be so sad that she will travel to a secluded Swiss spa resort, where she will become a target for another journalist posing as a professor.

The film’s director and screenwriter, Bruno Dumont, mocks not only the media world, but also modern France. It is no coincidence that the heroine’s name is France de Mer, which is consonant with the French La France demeure, that is, “France remains,” and in the original the film is called France, the name of the heroine, which coincides with the name of the country.

Bruno Dumont shoots very different films – from the detective drama Humanity (1999) to the absurd TV series about Little Kenken (2014–2018), all of which are played by non-professional actors. His previous film about Jeanne d’Arc was awarded a special prize in the Special View program at the 2019 Cannes International Film Festival. “Superstar” received only a nomination at Cannes this year.

The documentary film by director and film expert Pyotr Shepotinnik is dedicated to Sergei Bodrov Jr. The film is based on the archival records of the hero, as well as director Alexei Balabanov, who shot the main films in Bodrov’s career – “Brother” and “Brother-2”. The film also includes interviews with colleagues, friends and relatives of the actor and director: Sergei Selyanov, Vyacheslav Butusov, Sergei Astakhov and Nadezhda Vasilyeva (they all worked on “Brother” and “Brother-2”).

Bodrov appears before the viewer as a person, as an actor, as a hero of his time and, which is important, as a director. He managed to shoot only one film – “Sisters” (2001), but emphasized that he wanted to shoot further. While working on his second film “The Messenger” in the Karmadon Gorge, Sergei Bodrov, Jr., along with the entire film crew, died due to an avalanche.

The film was shown at the opening of the Kinotavr Film Festival this year. It is not the first time that Pyotr Shepotinnik has made a film about important persons from the world of cinema. Among his heroes are Marlen Khutsiev, Yevgeny Mironov, Kira Muratova, Yuri Lyubimov and many others.

“Ivan the Terrible”, directed by Sergei Eisenstein (1944). USSR, 12+

The last and one of the most important films of the great Sergei Eisenstein about the first Russian tsar is being re-released.

Sergei Eisenstein began working on Ivan the Terrible at the height of the evacuation war. Despite the harsh conditions in which the country was, the filming was generously funded – the film was commissioned by Joseph Stalin. It’s no secret that he compared himself to Grozny. Eisenstein understood what they wanted from him, and he coordinated a lot, including the script, with Stalin, but such control did not prevent the director from creating a real masterpiece.

The first part of a large-scale film epic with impressive scenery, massive battle scenes, special effects and music by Sergei Prokofiev tells about the early years of the reign of Ivan IV. He appears as a reformer who strengthened and unified the state, the conqueror of Kazan and a victim of the conspirators, who miraculously escaped death. The role of the tsar was played by Nikolai Cherkasov, and his henchman Malyuta was played by Mikhail Zharov. In the second part of the epic, Eisenstein painted a much less attractive image of the tsar, for which he paid: the film was put on a shelf and shown only during the Khrushchev thaw. But the first film was received with a bang by Stalin, viewers and critics – not only Soviet, but also foreign ones. At home, Eisenstein was given the Stalin Prize of the 1st degree, and at the first film festival in Locarno, the tape was awarded the prize for the best cinematography.
