In the Saratov region in the city of Engels, a festive rally dedicated to the 66th anniversary of the 1230th heavy bomber aviation regiment was held near the “Memory and Sorrow” stele.

“The current generation of officers is proud of the history of long-range aviation, and this is the great merit of the 1230th Heavy Aviation Regiment, which with valor performed the assigned tasks in the most difficult times. We sacredly honor the lessons of our predecessors in ensuring the security of our native Motherland, ”Major General Oleg Pchela, commander of the Engels long-range aviation unit of the Guards, said in his address.

In memory of the nine crews of the regiment, who had gone to heaven forever, funeral wreaths and flowers were laid at the “Memory and Sorrow” stele and a minute of silence was announced.

For reference:

The 1230th Heavy Aviation Regiment was formed back in 1955 and was equipped with Myasishchev’s strategic intercontinental bombers and they became the hallmark of the Engels airbase and the entire Saratov region. Later, at the dawn of perestroika under the Strategic Offensive Arms Treaty (START), some of the bombers were converted into refueling aircraft, which served faithfully until 1994.

In the same year, the management of the 201st heavy aviation division and the 1230th heavy aviation regiment were disbanded. They received new names, but continued the glorious combat traditions of pilots, which in many ways did not allow the Cold War to end as a global catastrophe.
