BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va., Oct. 1, 2021 – Fifty members of Machinists Union Local 598 (District 54) are on strike for a fair contract at Sulzer Pumps, Inc. in Barboursville. The strike began at midnight on Friday, Oct. 1. Members are now on the picket line outside the facility.
Machining and foundry workers voted overwhelmingly to reject the company’s final offer and to go on strike after company management refused to negotiate a reasonable contact. The company is seeking to gut seniority rights at the facility that protect good jobs in the Barboursville community.
“Machinists Union members at Sulzer Pumps are simply asking for the company to negotiate a fair contract,” said IAM District 54 President and Directing Business Representative T. Dean Wright, Jr. “Our members are taking a stand for their families and their community by demanding this company treat its employees with respect regarding their seniority with their employer. It is our sincere hope that Sulzer management realizes the importance of its dedicated workers.”
IAM District 54 represents more than 14,000 active and retired members in West Virginia, Ohio, northeastern Indiana, and Michigan.
The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) is among the largest industrial trade unions in North America and represents nearly 600,000 active and retired members in the manufacturing, aerospace, defense, airline, railroad, transportation, shipbuilding, woodworking, health care, and other industries.
