MIL OSI Translation. Government of the Republic of France statements from French to English –

The President of the Republic presided this Tuesday, September 28, 2021 alongside the President of Georgia, Mrs. Salomé ZOURABICHVILI, a ceremony at the Arc de triomphe to celebrate the centenary of the recognition of Georgia by France in January 1921. This ceremony exceptional underlines the importance of the relationship between the two countries and the particular role played by France during this past century in the preservation of freedom, territorial sovereignty and independence of Georgia.

This common history and the close ties forged between the French people and the Georgian people are the basis of the unique relationship that unites our two countries around the idea of freedom. It is embodied in the commitment and the ultimate sacrifice for Free France of Lieutenant-Colonel Amilakhvari in El Alamein in 1942 and remained famous for these words: ‘We foreigners have only one way to prove to France our gratitude for the welcome she has given us is to die for her ‘.

France, which stood alongside Georgia at the most difficult moments in its history, will continue to support it in preserving its stability and affirming its democracy. It reiterates its attachment to the ever deeper entrenchment of fundamental rights in Georgia, in particular freedom of the press, and to the consolidation of democratic and judicial institutions to the highest European standards.

France encourages the Georgian authorities to do everything in their power to ensure that the forthcoming municipal elections comply with the democratic values, norms and standards of the European Union. It will be particularly vigilant against any attempt to destabilize the democratic institutions of independent Georgia which runs counter to the aspirations of the Georgian people and is contrary to the interests of the European Union.

The President of the Republic will remain in close contact with the President of Georgia to continue working to strengthen ties between the two countries.
