The battle for Moscow was the first serious defeat of the German fascist army. On September 30, at the Victory Museum, one can learn how the Soviet people were able to defend their capital.

How Muscovites helped the military to defend the city, why the battle for Moscow became a kind of forge of personnel for the top commanding staff of the Red Army, and how Soviet troops managed to defeat superior enemy forces – this and much more will be told in the Victory Museum. September 30 marks 80 years since the beginning of the Battle of Moscow. On a memorable day for the whole country, the museum offers to remember how one of the key battles of the Great Patriotic War took place.

Visitors will find a guided tour, film screening and reading letters from the front. Part of the thematic program will be held online. Users are invited to take online tours and lectures. All events are free, some require pre-registration.

“The operation to seize Moscow began on September 30, 1941. The Germans expected to take the capital in 10-12 weeks, and destroy its inhabitants or take them prisoner. At the same time, the enemy outnumbered the number of soldiers and military equipment. To resist him, the Soviet people had to make tremendous efforts. More than seven million people defended the city, and in December the Red Army launched a counteroffensive and threw the enemy back 150–300 kilometers from Moscow. This was the first serious defeat of Hitler during the Great Patriotic War, ”said Alexander Shkolnik, director of the Victory Museum.

The thematic program will begin with the excursion “Moscow is behind us”. The guests will walk through the “Feat of the Army” exposition. The guide will explain why the operation to capture Moscow was codenamed Typhoon, and also tell you what resources and weapons were not enough to defend the city and how, despite all the difficulties, the German offensive was stopped. It will be about the famous battles near Mozhaisk, Kalinin (now Tver), Tula. It will be possible to learn about how ordinary residents helped the army to defend the city: they built fortifications, nursed the wounded, extinguished fires after the bombings. On this day, it will also be possible to watch on the big screen the famous film “The Defeat of German Troops near Moscow” (1942). It tells about the preparation of the capital for defense, about how Muscovites voluntarily went to the front and how the Red Army liberated towns and villages near Moscow. The film won an Oscar for Best Documentary. Film screenings will take place at 13:00, 15:00 and 17:00, there is no need to register in advance.

How did the participants describe the events of the battle for Moscow? What touching words did you write to your family and friends, what did you dream of? Were the soldiers afraid, knowing about the advantages of the attacking enemy, or, on the contrary, were they set for a feat? You can learn about this thanks to the surviving front-line letters of the people’s militias addressed to their families. The excerpts will be read by poet Maxim Dobrorodnov, resident of the creative association Made Inside. Beginning at 17:00 at the Generals’ Hall, no prior registration is required.
