More than a quarter of French people have taken to cycling since 2019, when the Government’s Cycling Plan was launched with € 600 million already committed for three years. € 250 million until 2022 will consolidate this progress. The objective: to triple the use of the bicycle by 2024.

Great getaway with + 28% of French people cycling across the country and even + 41% at weekends, compared to 2019.

“The turning point has been taken”, welcomes Barbara Pompili, Minister for the Ecological Transition. The French are now conquered by the “little queen”.

The practice of this mode of transport can take several forms: classic bicycle, electrically assisted bicycle (VAE), folding bicycle, tricycle, “sidecar”, multi-seat bicycle for transporting children, cargo bicycle for goods, etc.

Sales of electrically assisted bicycles (VAE) have increased fourfold since 2016: 135,000 in 2016 against 515,000 in 2020.

30% more cycle paths in three years. Since the end of 2017, cycle paths and greenways have increased by a third, or 13,000 new kilometers out of a total of 53,000 kilometers.

A very strong mobilization of the State

The Government is fully mobilized to help the French to get into cycling: bonus for the purchase of an electric bicycle, creation of cycle paths …

Launched in 2020, the “Cycling Help” has made it possible to:

• repair nearly 2 million bicycles at more than 4,100 repairers;

• to benefit from aid for the purchase of an electric bicycle;

• act against bicycle theft with the obligation of bicycle marking: 735,000 bicycles have been registered in the new single cycle identification file.

Ride safely

6,400 cyclists benefited from a “re-saddling course”; 52,000 children were able to follow a training course in “knowing how to ride a bicycle”.

Triple bicycle use by 2024

To continue the momentum and increase the use of cycling from 3 to 9% by 2024, nearly € 250 million more will be committed at the end of 2021 and during 2022, broken down as follows:

€ 150m (including € 100m from France relaunches) will subsidize the cycling facilities of local communities in each region after each call for projects;
€ 50 million are dedicated to developing station parking to double the number of spaces for cyclists in more than 1,000 stations in France;
several programs financed by energy saving certificates (Alvéole +, ColisActiv ’) will be extended and continued.
