Government of Timor-Leste expresses its solidarity with China

The Government of Timor-Leste expresses its heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of the People’s Republic of China following the massive devastation and loss of life resulting from recent days’ torrential rains in central China, which the country’s meteorological authorities say be the strongest of the last thousand years.

At least 25 people have died and seven are missing in the provincial capital, Zhengzhou, located about 700 kilometers southwest of Beijing. It is estimated that more than one million people were affected by the floods and around 200,000 people were evacuated to shelters.

Torrential rain has flooded the city’s metro system, destroyed roads, vehicles and homes, and hospitals are flooded and without electricity.

The Spokesperson for the VIII Constitutional Government, Minister Fidelis Magalhães, on behalf of the Prime Minister, Taur Matan Ruak and the entire Government, expressed his “solidarity with the Government and People of the People’s Republic of China, which face the effects of this catastrophe” and stated that “at this difficult time, our thoughts are with the victims and their families and we commend those who remain determined in the search for survivors”.
