The Government announced that from today, doctors enrolled under the Vaccination Subsidy Scheme and Residential Vaccination Programme will receive an additional subsidy of $50 per COVID-19 vaccine dose given to people aged 60 or above.

The move aims to further facilitate COVID-19 vaccination for the elderly.

The Government noted that as the risk of severe illness from COVID-19 increases with age, vaccination is strongly recommended for the elderly worldwide.

As at July 15, the percentage of those aged 60 or above in Hong Kong vaccinated with one dose of COVID-19 vaccine is only around 26%, which is far from satisfactory.

According to the latest recommendation on COVID-19 vaccination by government scientific committees and the Chief Executive’s expert advisory panel, elderly people belong to the group with the highest risks of complication and death from COVID-19, and vaccination is highly recommended for seniors for protection against infection.

The experts also recommended that senior citizens who have received influenza vaccines can safely receive those for COVID-19.

The Government encourages the elderly to receive COVID-19 vaccination early, adding that the outreach vaccination service or vaccination by visiting medical officers are provided to residential care homes and nursing homes.
