A utility tunnel project for the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics has passed its fire control inspection in the city’s northwestern Yanqing district, sources with the local government said on Friday.
As an essential municipal infrastructure in the Yanqing competition zone, the project is an “energy lifeline” for the National Alpine Skiing Center, the National Bobsleigh and Luge Center, the Olympic Village, the Media Center, and other facilities.
With a total length of about 7.9 kilometers, the tunnel will provide municipal pipeline energy transmission support for the snow-making water demand of the competition zone, domestic water circulation of the zone, electricity, telecommunications, and television cables of the events.
During the fire control inspection, a tester held a fire smoke gun to simulate fire smoke, and the smoke alarm device immediately activated the alarm as receiving the signal. Firefighters quickly put out the fire by the automatic fire alarm controller to feedback information to accurately monitor the early warning points.
The fire extinguishing system can be activated by a specific fire linkage signal to ensure the safety of the tunnel project in case of sudden fire, according to Fan Gang, director of the Engineering Quality Supervision Station of the Yanqing District Housing and Construction Committee.
Besides, the acceptance teams also carried out tests for various linkage equipment, such as the internal electric cabin, distribution room gas fire suppression system, water cabin fire shutter, and escape system.
With a vertical lift of 550 meters and a maximum slope of 15%, the utility tunnel is the first comprehensive tunnel in the medium and high mountain areas, with a significant drop and slope that put into use in China. The project’s construction is characterized by high ecological and environmental requirements, steep slopes, high safety requirements, high power security factors, and complex construction organizations.
“The fire control acceptance check is the last part of the utility tunnel construction work and the service assurance construction work in the core area of the competition zone has also entered the completion acceptance procedures in the final stage,” said Fan.
“We will also continue to do an excellent job of the completion acceptance of the Winter Olympics’ hotels,” he added.
As one of the three competition zones of Beijing 2022, Yanqing District will host alpine skiing, bobsleigh, and luge competitions during the Games.
