MIL-OSI Europe: Written question – Chinese industrial espionage in the European Union – E-002863/2021

Source: European Parliament

1. What is the Commission’s assessment of how big the problem is with what experts call ‘Chinese industrial espionage’ in the European Union as a whole?

2. If the investment agreement between China and the EU is ratified, it will make it easier for China to invest in the EU. Will this in any way increase the risk of Chinese industrial espionage? If so, how will the European Union make sure that industrial espionage does not become a bigger problem in the future?

3. There have been several cases in the US like the one involving Charles Lieber. When it comes to cooperation between universities within the EU and outside the EU, what sort of cooperation and agreements do scientists have to declare publicly? Under what circumstances can information sharing take place? In addition, what limits are there on this?
