Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Rep. Karen Bass (D-CA), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health and Global Human Rights issued the following statement:

“I want to commend President Biden for recognizing that everyone around the world should have equal access to the COVID-19 vaccine. The United States has recently purchased 500 billion Pfizer vaccines to be delivered by the end of June 2022 to several low and middle-income countries, including every African Union Member state. This is significant for the continent as it has been significantly affected by COVID-19 depleting its economies and social systems and exacerbating its health systems and treatment of its other infectious diseases.

“This Administration has clearly stated that the health of the global community is a priority of the United States by pledging a donation of at least 80 million vaccines to help combat COVID-19 around the world.  This Administration is also contributing billions to COVAX and is helping strengthen the overseas capacity of local production for safer and effective COVID-19 vaccines.

“We all want to get back to normal, and as more American citizens are vaccinated, it is now time for the international community to continue to assist in making sure that there is a global supply of safe and effective vaccines for everyone, including the world’s disadvantaged.”
