Wholesale sales prices, May 2021 + 1.7% on the previous month + 9.7% on the same month last year

WIESBADEN – Wholesale sales prices rose by 9.7% in May 2021 compared to May 2020. The last time there was a stronger price increase compared to the same month last year was in July 2008 (+ 9.9%). As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports, the rise in wholesale prices accelerated again: in April 2021 the change compared to the previous year was + 7.2% and in March + 4.4%. In May 2021, wholesale sales prices increased by 1.7% month-on-month.

The major influence on the rate of change in the wholesale price index compared to the same month of the previous year was the price increase in wholesale petroleum products in May 2021 (+46.8%).

There were particularly strong price increases compared to the previous year in the wholesale of scrap and residual materials with an increase of 64.6% as well as with ores, metals and semi-finished metal products (+ 41.2%). Raw and sawn timber was also considerably more expensive than in the previous year (+37.7%), as did grain, raw tobacco, seeds and animal feed (+22.9%) and chemical products (+11.4%).

In contrast, prices for data processing equipment, peripheral equipment and software (-4.7%) and live animals (-2.5%) were lower than in May 2020 at the wholesale level.
