Fifteen Massey University alumni have been named in the Queen’s Birthday Honours list, including Chair of the Riddet Institute Board and 2021 Massey Medal recipient Dr Kevin Marshall.
Dr Marshall was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to food science and technology. His work laid the foundation for waste and environmental performance of dairy factories and the development of New Zealand milk protein products – an industry now worth billions of dollars. Dr Marshall gained his PhD (Technology) from Massey in 1974.
James Brownlie (Diploma in Horticulture Vegetable Production) was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to agriculture and education, as was Garry Carnachan (Bachelor of Science) for services to secondary school sport.
Ryan Archibald (Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration) was made a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to hockey. Other Massey alumni given this honour are Jane Arnott (Bachelor of Arts) for services to Pacific communities and conservation advocacy; Catherine Cooney JP, (Bachelor of Arts (Honours)) for services to health and the community; Miles Ellery (Master of Educational Psychology) for services to youth, education and the community; Iqbal Haque (Master of Education Administration) for services to education governance; Bruce Hart (Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration) for services to education; Shirley Kerr (Bachelor of Science) for services to mycology; and Susanne (Sue) Laurent (Diploma in Teaching) for services to wildlife conservation.
David Matthews (Diploma in Education, Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration, and Master of Business Studies) was made a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for services to people with disabilities.
Sonia Edwards (Bachelor of Education) was awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to historical research and the community, as well as Robert Greenfield (Postgraduate Diploma in Business and Administration) for services to college football and Te Rehia Papesch (Bachelor of Arts) for services to the community and public service.
