Modern public transport in the capital saves city dwellers time and money, as well as does less damage to the environment.

Today the bus fleet in Moscow is the youngest in Europe. The main city carrier Mosgortrans has completely renewed its rolling stock, having purchased more than nine thousand modern buses since 2010. There are 380 kilometers of dedicated lanes in the capital. More than 4.2 million passengers pass through them every day. The Moscow Mayor recalled that since 1992, minibuses have been the most popular land transport in the city. As a rule, they served the most popular and profitable routes, accumulated near metro stations, and did not provide travel benefits.

“In the early 2010s, it was no longer possible to put up with all this. It was necessary to change the entire route network of the city, ”Sergei Sobyanin noted.

Dedicated lanes, Troika and electric buses

Dedicated lanes for public transport began to appear in the city. Thanks to them, the average bus speed has increased by one and a half to two times.

“Public transport has returned to the center of Moscow, from which it would seem that private cars have forever ousted it,” the Moscow Mayor wrote.

The Troika card removed most of the difficulties with paying for travel and turnstiles were canceled in Moscow. This measure alone allowed passengers to save up to 25 minutes of travel time, which buses used to stand idle at stops, waiting for everyone to enter through the front door.

The old stop pavilions are gradually being replaced by new ones – with electronic boards, navigation, ticket vending machines, USB connectors and Wi-Fi. It is planned to complete their renewal in the next three to four years.

“And one more thing – the Russian capital is the European leader in the number of electric buses. 600 of these machines work on the streets of the city. And in two years there will be 820 more of them. In 2022, the first electric accordion buses will enter the routes, which can accommodate up to 135 passengers. And we will increase the number of charging stations to 383, which will allow expanding the network to new areas, ”added Sergei Sobyanin.

The fate of minibuses

The Mayor of Moscow noted that commercial carriers can operate in the capital, but they must follow uniform standards approved by the city authorities. On some routes, it is indeed better to use small buses, but in most cases, large and medium-sized buses are needed in the capital.

“Public transport is a single organism, all parts of which solve a common task: to quickly and comfortably deliver a passenger from point A to point B. This means that competition for passengers between different transport companies on the same route is inappropriate. If we are to compete, then not on the streets, but on tender sites, and in no case at the expense of the safety of Moscow residents, ”Sergei Sobyanin emphasized.

In 2015, a new route network was approved in the capital. About 70 percent of the traffic was kept by the city carrier. The remaining 30 percent was raffled off in competitions, with the winners of which were awarded contracts for five years. Today, there are nine commercial carriers operating in the city, serving 249 routes. They bought about two thousand new comfortable buses.

Urban transport is adapted to carry passengers with limited mobility. Modern buses have a low floor and a folding ramp for wheelchair users.

“And of course, the beneficiaries received the right to free travel,” Sergei Sobyanin noted.

Vehicles undergo regular technical inspection, and drivers undergo medical control. The carriers have a traffic safety service, which is working on the prevention of road accidents.

The average age of buses operating on the new model is four years. Minibuses were rarely younger than seven or eight years old.

“All buses are of Euro-4 and higher class. So the transition to a new model is not only reliability and comfort, but also a contribution to improving the ecology of Moscow, ”the Moscow Mayor wrote.

Clock Schedule

This year, new tenders will be held and contracts with commercial carriers will be renegotiated. This will lead to a number of changes. For example, most routes will have a clock schedule. This means that buses will leave at regular intervals – every five, 10 or 15 minutes, depending on the type of route.

There will be more seats in transport, there will be a possibility of contactless payment for travel by bank cards, USB sockets for charging gadgets. Carriers will wash and disinfect buses more often. The drivers will work in uniform. The buses will be equipped with a driver fatigue control system “Antisone”.

All previous requirements – compliance with the schedule, payment by Troika and free travel for beneficiaries – will remain in force.

“We will continue to develop bus transportation as one of the main priorities in creating high-quality public transport. Ecology is also important. Therefore, we set a course for a complete transition to electric buses in Mosgortrans, and in the future – from commercial carriers, ”concluded Sergei Sobyanin.
