In the 43rd minute, Quoc Phuong curled a wonderful free-kick directly over the wall and into the top corner of the net, leaving no chance for goalkeeper Vu Tuyen Quang to block.
The goal was well-deserved for Ljupko Petrovic’s side, who created more clear-cut opportunities throughout the first half despite away-field pressure.
Minh Tung threatened to open Thanh Hoa’s scoring after just 15 minutes but his shot was stopped by Pham Van Nam right at the goal line. A few minutes after the hour mark, Gramoz Kurtaj powered in a header from close range that forced the Binh Dinh goalie to make a good save.
The hosts came close to equalising the score 10 minutes after the break, but Thanh Hoa keeper Thanh Diep neutralised their threat by brilliantly parrying Tan Tai’s shot in the penalty area. This was another rare stir created by Nguyen Duc Thang’s side in the second half in front of their opponents’ tight defence.
With their third win in the last four matches, Thanh Hoa FC have climbed to fifth place in the standings with 14 points, while newbies Topenland Binh Dinh still stand at ninth, two points behind.
On the same day, two goals by Chevaughe Walsh (32’) and Tuan Hai (90’+3) steered Hong Linh Ha Tinh to a 2-0 victory against Song Lam Nghe An. The triumph, however, was enough to rescue them from bottom place, because Saigon FC played out a goalless draw with Hai Phong FC to remain one point above Ha Tinh.
