New York (Mar 7/21). This Wednesday, April 7 and Thursday, April 8, Colombia participates in the Tenth Anniversary of the ECOSOC Youth Forum, which is held in virtual format, with a delegation at the highest level, led by the First Lady, María Juliana Ruíz. It is also made up of the Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Guillermo Fernández de Soto; the Presidential Councilor for Youth, Juan Sebastián Arango; and the Director of the Colombian Institute of Family Welfare (ICBF), Lina María Arbeláez.
The priority theme for this 59th session is “A Decade of Action: Building a resilient recovery”. The deliberations in the opening sessions have focused on the perspective of the world’s youth to generate responses to the multidimensional challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and continue to advance in the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In the national intervention, led by the First Lady, the work of the Colombian Government in prioritizing young people as a key population for the development of the country was highlighted, highlighting the consolidation of the Presidential Council for Youth and the creation of executive capacities and operational through the Directorate of Adolescence and Youth established in the ICBF.
The country will have a joint representation in the Regional Session of Latin America by the Presidential Councilor Juan Sebastián Arango and the Director Lina María Arbeláez. This will be the opportunity to publicize our regional leadership in strengthening the mechanisms of youth participation in decision-making spaces and the strengthening of trained youth leadership, with criteria, purposeful and constructive. Likewise, the Sacúdete Strategy was presented, through which the human development of thousands of young Colombians is being promoted through the approach of the three Es: Education, Employment and Entrepreneurship.
In the thematic session on Prosperity, dedicated to the discussion of the Sustainable Development Goals, delegate Roberto Hinestrosa, shared the vision of Colombia on the positive impact that the participation of young people has in the generation of transformations of global financing policies that aim for a speedy recovery.
Ambassador Fernández de Soto indicated that “the Tenth ECOSOC Youth Forum is bearing fruit for the country’s dedicated work in the field of youth because we are showing the world that young people are a priority population segment with and for which this Government has been working. ”.
The ECOSOC Youth Forum is the United Nations’ most important discussion platform on youth matters, in which representatives from all over the world participate, contributing their innovative visions to the solution of current problems.
