The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) of the Light Reconnaissance and Intervention Unit n ° 4 (ULRI 4), accompanied by the French and Estonian special forces of the Task Force (TF) TAKUBA, dealt blows to armed terrorist groups (GAT) in a sanctuary area where they thought they were untouchable, allowing the FAMa to strengthen their presence in Liptako.
After several days of operations in the Ansongo and then Labbezanga regions, Malian forces and elements of TF TAKUBA notably succeeded in freeing a Malian hostage. They also succeeded in neutralizing several fighters belonging to the GAT and seizing equipment and weapons belonging to them, putting great pressure on their ability to operate in the area.
For the French and Estonian soldiers, this engagement in combat with the FAMa, side by side on the ground, is an undeniable factor of success.
The European Task Force TAKUBA, created at the end of the Pau summit on January 13, 2020, has the mission of advising, assisting and supporting Malian conventional units in the fight against terrorism. It is part of Operation BARKHANE.
Led by the French armies, in partnership with the G5 Sahel countries, Operation BARKHANE was launched on August 1, 2014. It is based on a strategic approach based on a logic of partnership with the main countries of the Sahel-Saharan strip ( BSS): Burkina Faso, Mali, Mauritania, Niger and Chad. It brings together around 5,100 soldiers whose mission is to fight armed terrorist groups and support the armed forces of partner countries so that they can take this threat into account.
