Legal security for travel agencies and travelers
Today the cabinet passed the bill on insolvency protection through travel insurance funds and on changes to travel regulations. The Union parliamentary group welcomes this step and is now pressing for rapid implementation. The legal and consumer policy spokesman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group, Jan-Marco Luczak, and the consumer protection officer Sebastian Steineke explain:
Jan-Marco Luczak: “After Thomas Cook went bankrupt, it was clear that we had to put travel law on a new basis. For the Union it was not acceptable that many hundreds of thousands of travelers were stuck in their vacation spots and in the end the taxpayers had to bear the costs. It is therefore good that the Ministry of Justice has finally taken up our proposal for a travel insurance fund. In this way we give the travel industry and travelers legal security for the best time of the year. We all hope that Corona will allow vacation travel again soon.
In the future, travelers can rely on the fact that the travel price they have paid is fully covered in the event of insolvency. In this way, we ensure that vacation dreams do not turn into a financial nightmare. With the travel insurance fund, we are creating a solvent instrument that will protect against insolvencies by and within the travel industry. In this way we create the conditions so that the taxpayer will no longer be claimed in the future. “
Sebastian Steineke: “It was high time that the minister finally presented something at our pressure more than six months after the key points were published. Both the Thomas Cook bankruptcy and the major problems in the travel industry since the beginning of the corona pandemic have shown that we have to act quickly. Many companies in the industry fear for their very existence. On the other hand, numerous consumers were left with their costs for travel services that were not carried out, even though they themselves got into financial difficulties due to Corona. Here it is important to create a balance of interests and to be prepared for future failures. The present draft offers suitable approaches for this. “
