The draft law is the right step – mobilize farmers for insect protection
The Federal Cabinet passed the Insect Protection Act presented by the Federal Environment Ministry on Wednesday. The environmental policy spokeswoman for the CDU / CSU parliamentary group in the German Bundestag, Marie-Luise Dött, explains:
“It is good that the law has finally been drafted. This means that urgent measures from the insect protection action program are now being initiated. Insects are an important part of biodiversity. Protecting them is a mission that we take very seriously.
Insects need an insect-friendly landscape, protection from unnecessary exposure to light and considerate use of pesticides and herbicides. An essential prerequisite for effective protection of insects is the support of agriculture and forestry. It is therefore good that it is now planned to use cooperative approaches together with agriculture and forestry in order to preserve the habitats of insects. Farmers and foresters must receive compensation for their services and for restrictions on use that they have to shoulder for reasons of environmental and nature conservation. This must be clearly and reliably regulated in the law. The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Julia Klöckner, rightly attached great importance to this during the cabinet review.
We will discuss the draft law in the parliamentary procedure with the involvement of experts on the effectiveness for insect protection, but especially with regard to the effects on agriculture. “
