Press Release

WASHINGTON – Today, Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi introduced a resolution to establish January 6th as a National Day of Remembrance in honor of those who died at the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol building on January 6th, 2021.

On January 6th, Congress convened to certify the electoral votes of the 2020 presidential election for President Biden. In response, a mob from the “Save America” rally, where former President Trump spoke, breached the Capitol building to overturn a democratic election which they believed was stolen from former President Trump. While in the U.S. Capitol building, the insurrectionists ransacked, stole property, and assaulted police officers. In total, five individuals died as a result of this domestic terrorism event, including United States Capitol Police Officer Brian D. Sicknick.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s resolution puts forward the following direction:

That it is the sense of the House of Representatives that—

  1. there should be established a National Day of Remembrance to remember the insurrection that occurred on January 6, 2021, at the United States Capitol; and
  2. we should come together as a country and ensure that such events never occur again in our Nation of, by, and for the people
