The Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) calls for a reorientation of the European agricultural policy (GAP). On the occasion of the meeting of the agriculture ministers of the federal states with the federal agriculture minister Julia Klöckner on Friday tomorrow, the environmental association reiterated its criticism of the previous distribution of the agricultural billions from Brussels. “The acceptance of the EU agricultural policy stands or falls with whether the funds will be tied to the fulfillment of socially desired services in the future”, explains the BUND chairman Olaf Bandt. “Instead of distributing subsidies over fields and meadows with the watering can, we have to support those farmers who do more for the climate, the environment and animal welfare. If we as a society do not act now, nature, the climate and businesses will suffer further damage. ”From the BUND’s point of view, the resolutions made so far in Brussels are largely disappointing. At the same time, the national implementation of the CAP offers the opportunity, at least in Germany, to meet the environmental and climate policy challenges and to support the agricultural businesses in their socio-ecological conversion: for more animal welfare, diverse arable farming and climate-friendly agriculture. But it is not yet clear what exactly the new CAP will look like. And while the final framework for the next agricultural funding period from 2023 is still being discussed in Brussels and the trialogue is not expected to end until after Easter, Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner is already pushing the pace in Germany. Olaf Bandt: “The Agriculture Ministers’ Conference should not allow itself to be put under pressure and decide on key points ahead of time. Decisions on the national structure of the CAP in Germany should only be taken after the end of the EU trialogue. I also expect the recommendations of the Future Commission on Agriculture to be included in these discussions. The goals for the protection of the climate and biodiversity, as described in the farm-to-fork and the EU biodiversity strategy, must also be taken into account in the national GAP strategy plan. ”BUND demands that the new funding program for the environment and climate, the Eco-Schemes are provided with attractive offers for farmers and a sufficient budget. “The funding period 2021 to 2027 must initiate the withdrawal from the flat-rate area bonuses. In the following funding period, there should no longer be area premiums in their previous form, ”demands Bandt. At the same time, the BUND is renewing its expectation that the conversion of livestock farming, the expansion of organic farming and the stopping of farm inheritance will be taken into account by the agriculture ministers
