SDLP Assembly Group Leader Nichola Mallon MLA has welcomed support for an SDLP motion which rejects Brexit and withholds consent for Boris Johnson’s Brexit legislation.
The party’s Deputy Leader said that the move sets an important precedent that she expected other devolved administrations to follow.
Nichola Mallon MLA said:
“The SDLP has been steadfast in its opposition to Brexit and our defence of the interests of people in Northern Ireland. Our pledge to people in all of our communities is that we will remain committed to restoring their rights as European citizens and our return to full EU membership.
“The Assembly has again rejected Brexit, backing our motion to withhold consent for the legislation underpinning Boris Johnson’s deal. Over the coming days, I expect other devolved administrations to make similar declarations.
“There is now a very serious fracture at the heart of politics across these islands and it is clearly being deepened by the brinkmanship of the current British Government. People are already engaging in the conversation about a different kind of future. It’s important that we manage that carefully and respectfully in the time ahead.
“Today, the British Government must accept that it does not have the support or the confidence of the people of Northern Ireland for their Brexit. Work must begin across our islands and across our communities on the type of society we want to be and the type of future we want to build. The SDLP is ready to work hard and meaningfully in partnership to address the challenges that lie ahead.”
