Local Assembly Member and GP encourages Londoners to get the Covid-19 vaccine as he receives first dose of the jab

As a local GP, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, received his first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine on Tuesday (29th December) at the Ealing Town Hall hub. He is now using his platform as the local London Assembly Member to urge members of the community to take up the vaccine as soon as they receive their invitation from the NHS.

His calls come as infection rates have surged in the capital in recent weeks with the arrival of a new strain of the coronavirus. On 29th December, almost 15,000 new coronavirus cases were recorded in London.

Today, the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine was approved for use in the UK. The Government have bought one hundred million doses of the vaccine which, unlike other available vaccines, can be stored in a standard fridge.

The Mayor of London is now calling upon the Government to expedite its national vaccination programme to ensure at least two million people are in line for a dose each week.

Dr Sahota is a GP based at the Greenford Avenue Family Health Practice and has been in line for the vaccination alongside other health and social care workers.

Local London Assembly Member, Dr Onkar Sahota AM, said:

“As a local GP, I was delighted to receive my first dose of the vaccine which will help me to protect my patients and the wider community from the virus.

“We have recently had the fantastic news that the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has also been approved. This will be a game-changer in our fight against the pandemic, as it can be stored in a standard fridge, meaning it can be more easily rolled out in care homes and GP’s surgeries.

“Right now, it cannot be overstated that our capital faces a stark and urgent situation with infection rates surging and our NHS becoming increasingly overwhelmed due to the new strain.

“The extraordinary efforts of the international scientific community have given us a shot at finally getting ahead of the coronavirus. This is why I am urging everyone in the community to get the perfectly safe vaccine as soon as they are invited to.

“In the meantime, we must all stick to the rules and contain the spread. We simply must not fall at the last hurdle and push our NHS to its breaking point”.
