Deputy Prime Minister – Plenipotentiary of the President in the Far Eastern Federal District, Chairman of the Organizing Committee Yuri Trutnev approved the composition of the organizing committee for preparing and ensuring the chairmanship of the Russian Federation in the Arctic Council in 2021-2023. It includes representatives of the Presidential Administration, Government, relevant ministries, departments, as well as heads of divisions of large corporations and organizations on the Arctic track.

“The Arctic is one of the priority areas for our country. Unique conditions for launching new investment projects are being created for the Russian Arctic zone. The entire Russian Arctic has become, in fact, one large economic zone. Work is underway to develop the Northern Sea Route as a competitive trunk corridor. Every year, the volume of traffic along the Northern Sea Route increases by about 30%. The state supports Arctic research and development. We see how interest in the Arctic is growing all over the world. Our country can and should become a leader among the Arctic states, set trends and shape the Arctic agenda, ”said Yuri Trutnev.

“At present, the topic of industrial development of the Arctic shelf and Arctic shipping is increasingly attracting the attention of various countries, the space for scientific research is expanding more and more. Including the global problem of climate warming can radically change the situation. All these challenges will be considered during Russia’s chairmanship of the Arctic Council and the forthcoming Arctic – Territory of Dialogue International Arctic Forum next year, ”said Anton Kobyakov, Advisor to the President, Deputy Chairman and Executive Secretary of the Organizing Committee.

The Arctic is a prime example of how rapidly the modern world is changing. Quite recently, a region that is largely peripheral in the context of world politics is literally turning into one of the main objects of increased attention of states, as well as major national and transnational corporations.

“Within the framework of the upcoming chairmanship, among the most important issues, we will jointly consider common challenges, and first of all, the issue related to climate change. This is a global topic, the consequences of which can be minimized by the entire Arctic community. The climate agenda will be one of the key ones, and we intend to propose new formats of cooperation within the chairmanship, ”stressed Alexei Chekunkov, Minister for the Development of the Far East and the Arctic.

The Arctic Council is the leading intergovernmental forum to promote cooperation, coordination and interaction between Arctic states, indigenous peoples and Arctic residents in order to jointly address Arctic issues, which include sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic. Through its working groups, it regularly produces comprehensive, cutting-edge assessment studies on environmental and social issues.
