The Housing Department has inspected the drainage pipes of about 230 public housing estates, with most of the pipes found to be in satisfactory condition.
The department has been conducting the inspections since the outbreak of the COVID-19 epidemic, and will continue the preliminary inspections of the drainage facilities of the remaining 300 public housing blocks, which is expected to be completed by the end of March 2021.
The Housing Authority said it proactively inspected flats sharing the same drainage system with those with confirmed COVID-19 cases.
On top of the existing Responsive In-flat Maintenance and Total Maintenance Schemes, a special inspection plan was devised with additional resources to reduce the risk of the virus’s spread.
Moreover, under the Drainage Inspection Programme launched in October, the Housing Department is formulating a sequence for the inspection of about 800,000 public rental flats based on the findings from the preliminary inspection since the COVID-19 outbreak, conditions of drainage pipes, maintenance records, percentage of elderly households and age of housing estates or buildings.
Priority is given to the common drain pipes in the estates with COVID-19 cases. The Drainage Inspection Programme is expected to be completed within 18 months.
Meanwhile, the Housing Authority is carrying out inspections under the programme at Choi Wan (II) Estate. With the co-operation of tenants, it expects to gain access to all the flats of Fung Chak House before January 1 and their drainage pipes will be inspected and repaired if necessary.
The authority said it has been in full co-operation with the Government on measures to curb the virus’ spread and has reminded domestic and commercial tenants to maintain good hygiene practices in the estates and reduce social contact.
