Labour calls on Education Secretary to make a statement on the reopening of schools and colleges

Kate Green, Labour’s Shadow Education Secretary, has called on Gavin Williamson to make a statement to Parliament tomorrow on the return of schools and colleges. The Prime Minister and Education Secretary met yesterday but 24 hours later no clarity has been provided to parents, staff and pupils.

Labour has urged the Government to publish SAGE advice about the return of schools and colleges next week, after reports that scientific advisors have said stricter restrictions, including school closures, may be needed.

Kate Green said:

“Coronavirus rates are rising, and parents, staff and pupils are crying out for clarity about the start of term next week.

“Silence from government is not an option. The education secretary must come to parliament tomorrow, set out a plan for schools and colleges, and provide desperately needed leadership. He must also urgently publish the SAGE advice on schools.”
