In August of this year, the gas market was liberalized and as a result, the consumers were given the right to freely choose suppliers. This was emphasized by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during the wrap-up sitting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on December 28.
According to the Prime Minister, currently, the state-owned Naftogaz offers the lowest gas prices for household consumers. Denys Shmyhal noted that it is possible to change the supplier online in a few minutes and urged citizens to choose the best option so as not to overpay for gas.
The Prime Minister also commissioned the acting Minister of Energy Yurii Vitrenko together with the Antimonopoly Committee to check whether gas prices are reasonable.
“It is necessary to conduct an audit of tariff formation and consider the possibility of reducing those components of the tariff that are unfair and unjustified from the point of view of the market. This applies to both the tariff for gas transportation and gas ratios. You have all the levers to resolve this issue,” the Prime Minister stressed.
In addition, the Prime Minister instructed the Ministry of Energy to submit an updated fuel and energy balance of Ukraine to the Government and the National Security and Defense Council by January 25, 2021.
“The updated balance should show all Ukrainians that the Government understands the problems of the industry and seeks a compromise between the social component and the interests of business,” said Denys Shmyhal.
