Russian servicemen of the International Mine Action Center of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation carry out tasks to search for and neutralize explosives in the area of the Thonghaihin airfield (Xienghuang province) in the Lao People’s Democratic Republic.

On 19 November 2020, the detachment departed for the third year in a row to carry out humanitarian demining missions in Laos.

A feature of demining in this area is the presence of detectable ammunition at a depth of 170 centimeters and a large number of ferromagnetic elements, which significantly slows down the pace of search.

The personnel of the demining unit use only modern means of search, detection and protection. These are OVR-2-02 demining suits, IMP-S2 and PIPL mine detectors of various types, MBI-P2 depth bomb detectors, MG-1 metal detectors. All GP search tools have proven their reliability under high intensity of use in difficult climatic conditions.

From October 2018 to March 2019 and October 2019 to March 2020, the demining squad of the International Mine Action Center of the Russian Armed Forces performed the task of humanitarian demining of the territory of the Lao People’s Democratic Republic and training Lao military personnel to work on the transferred explosive ordnance search equipment on the basis of the expanded branch of the Center. During two business trips, more than 110 hectares of territory were cleared, 1180 explosive objects were discovered and destroyed. These are mainly cluster submunitions of American aerial bombs dropped by the United States on Laos during the Vietnam War in 1964-1973.
