Volunteers help animals socialize, leash dogs, play with cats, treat animals to treats, and look for a new home for them.

There are 13 municipal animal shelters in Moscow, which house about 17,000 dogs and cats. They are supervised by veterinarians, nursing and socialization specialists. They feed the animals several times a day, change their water, monitor their health and keep the enclosures clean.

A lot of work is done by volunteers: about three thousand volunteers regularly visit animals, helping them to socialize. They teach dogs to leash, play with cats, treat animals to treats and look for a new home for them.

Volunteers closely monitor which family they send their wards to. Potential owners should definitely go through an interview, get to know the dog or cat they plan to shelter, and enter into a custody agreement. At first, volunteers keep track of how things are with animals that have found a new home. The owners send photos of pets, tell how their adaptation is going, and consult on some issues.

To find new owners, volunteers mainly use social networks. They regularly post photos and videos of their wards, talk about their characters and habits. Exhibitions and festivals also help to accommodate cats and dogs. This year, volunteers organized animal participation in five of these events, including some online. In addition, volunteers help to carry out charity events to collect help from foundations and organizations, during which food, toys, leashes, harnesses and other necessary things are donated to dogs and cats.

Schoolchildren, students and teams of various enterprises also visit the shelters under their care. The visits are conducted in the format of group introductory actions. Participants can interact with animals, give them gifts or do a good deed. For example, in February, activists of the youth council of the Department of Housing and Communal Services and specialists from the Center for Coordination of the State Institution of Information Technologies helped to build an isolation ward for cats in Nekrasov shelter…

Those wishing to communicate with animals can visit them on all days, except for sanitary ones. Each shelter has its own schedule. You can find out more on the official websites of the institutions.
