A virtual memorial service to remember Sunderland people who lost their lives in 2020 will be broadcast online.

The special service, filmed at Sunderland Crematorium, will be broadcast over YouTube and social media to offer comfort and an opportunity to reflect for the friends and families of those who have passed away this year.

Including readings, reflections and poems, the service is led by Councillor Graeme Miller, Leader of Sunderland City Council and Reverend Chris Howson, with contributions from Celebrants Chris May and Debbie Green.

Although a memorial service could not take place in person due to Covid-19, it is hoped that Sunderland residents will watch online and pay tribute to loved ones by lighting a candle at home.

Councillor Graeme Miller, Leader of Sunderland City Council, said: “As we head towards Christmas and the end of the year it is a time when people reflect and remember, and for anyone who has lost a loved one it is a particularly important time.

“Many funeral services were impacted by the pandemic this year, so this service is for people of all faiths who want to remember someone who has died. I hope it will bring some comfort and an opportunity to reflect.”

The memorial service will be available at at 6pm on Monday 21 December.

The recording will also be shared on Sunderland UK Facebook and Twitter at @SunderlandUK.
