Press release No. 526 from December 21, 2020

WIESBADEN – In autumn 2020, the farms in Germany sown winter cereals on 5.10 million hectares of arable land for the coming 2021 harvest. As reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), the area sown for winter grain for the 2021 harvest remained almost unchanged compared to the area under cultivation in 2020 (+1%). Winter grain includes winter wheat, winter barley, rye and winter mingle grain as well as the wheat-rye cross triticale.

The area sown for winter wheat, the most important type of cereal in Germany, has changed only slightly compared to this year’s cultivation area. With an area of 2.83 million hectares, the sown area increased by 74,000 hectares (+ 3%). The largest changes in area for winter wheat were observed in the states of Schleswig-Holstein (+19,400 hectares), Bavaria (+17,600 hectares) and Lower Saxony (+16,700 hectares). There was only a slight decline in area in the states of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (-6,100 hectares) and Thuringia (-3,700 hectares). There were also no major changes in the cultivation of rye and winter marsh crops. The sown area was 646,200 hectares, which is 12,700 hectares (+ 2%) more than in 2020.

Winter barley was sown on 1.28 million hectares of arable land. The area sown was 2% (-32,000 hectares) below the area under cultivation in 2020.

There was also no major change in the area where triticale was sown. An area of 341,400 hectares was used for triticale.

Winter rape was sown on 978,400 hectares. This is 24,900 hectares (+ 3%) more than the area under cultivation in the 2020 harvest.

Methodological note:

The extrapolated sowing areas are based on reports from a limited number of harvest reporters in the federal states from the end of November 2020. Therefore, these results are to be assessed as cultivation tendencies, which can change until the harvest in 2021 due to winter damage, pests and disease.
