“The blockade of the EU budget by Poland and Hungary has failed. The attempts to turn the rule of law mechanism into a toothless tiger could be prevented thanks to the German Council Presidency. Europe succeeds in changing course for a stronger EU budget and the urgently needed reconstruction. This heralded the decline in the influence of European anti-democrats like Orbán. It is now up to the EU Commission to apply this mechanism consistently.
The decision to strengthen Europe-wide cooperation in the health sector, the so-called Health Union, is progress. It enables the European Union to act faster and more purposefully in extreme health situations. The Covid-19 pandemic shows how crucial fast and coordinated health policies are in Europe. With the decision, Europe will be more capable of acting and better equipped in the future.
I welcome the agreement by the Heads of State and Government to cut CO2 emissions across Europe by 55% by 2030. This is a first step that seemed impossible a few months ago. Here, too, it shows that perseverance pays off. Further efforts must follow in order to achieve the Paris climate targets.
The last word has still not been spoken in the Brexit negotiations, even if the chances of finding a solution by the final deadline next Sunday are getting smaller and smaller. The rifts seem too deep, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson too unapologetic. We still very much regret the UK’s exit. It will primarily hit the people and the economy of the British Isles. The European community is strong and prepared for all eventualities. “
