With the crews of surface ships of the Caspian Flotilla (CFL), night exercises were held at the basing point for the transmission of light signals as part of the training of tasks to observe the secrecy of navigation.

According to the plan of the exercises, the KFl ship strike group was supposed to remain unnoticed by the mock enemy and to maintain communication with each other by means of a light signal. For this, all means of communication on the ships were de-energized, and the process of transmitting information was carried out using directional and non-directional light signaling devices.

Directional devices (MSNP-250M, signal searchlight, flashlight “Problesk”) are used both at anchor and on the move, when it is necessary to maintain secrecy of communication. Non-directional devices (klotik lights) are allowed to be used in cases where there is no danger of being detected when parking in the base or on a protected roadstead.

The means of light communication are used depending on the conditions of the combat, meteorological or navigation situation, as well as for observance of secrecy. Usually, signal lights are used, but in poor visibility conditions, a signal searchlight is used, the beam of which is directed not to the ship, but to the clouds.

The process of transmitting information by means of light communication is a “blinking” of light, denoting encoded text or digital groups. After the other ship receives the light message, it is decrypted and answered in the same way. In this way, you can transfer any information.

About 10 crews of the flotilla’s surface ships took part in the night training. All signals were correctly transmitted and decoded.
