The main condition for conducting a survey is snow cover, on which animal tracks are clearly visible.

Mospriroda specialists will begin to conduct winter tracking of animals in the natural areas of the capital. This makes it possible to determine the number of animals in a large area and their species composition.

Special method

For control, winter route counts are used. The method was developed to measure the hunting resources in the area. In Moscow, he helps to control the quality and stability of ecosystems in natural areas. The main condition for such surveys is snow cover, on which animal tracks are clearly visible. Control measurements are usually taken the day after an overnight snowfall. If it was not there, then on the first day the specialists overwrite the old paw prints, and on the second day they fix the new ones.

Winter surveys are carried out along the planned routes, which do not change from year to year. This gives the smallest calculation error. Ecologists record the number of tracks crossing the specified route, and then indicate the intersection points and the type of animal or bird on a map or in a GPS navigator.

Zaitsev counts in winter

In natural areas of Moscow, the census of animals and birds begins in December and lasts until mid-March, that is, as long as the snow cover remains.

In January – March 2020, with the help of winter route counts, a fox, a weasel with cubs and a squirrel were found in the Tsaritsyno Natural and Historical Park. A brown hare, a squirrel, a raccoon dog and a wild boar were recorded in the Moskvoretsky Natural and Historical Park. Traces of European hares, foxes, white hares, weasels, minks, ermines, pine martens and squirrels were found by specialists in the Bitsevsky forest.

Foxes, squirrels and weasels were spotted in the Kuzminki-Lyublino Natural and Historical Park. Squirrels, weasel, pine marten, hares-brown hares have left their traces in the natural and historical parks “Izmailovo” and “Kosinsky”. In addition, squirrels were found in the Kuskovo forest park, and weasels were found in the Zelenogradsky complex.

On the territory of the natural monument “Valley of the Chermyanka River from Dezhnev’s passage to the mouth” and in the natural-historical park “Ostankino”, beaver tracks were recorded. Experts noticed animal paw prints, bites, wintering grounds (hut and burrows) along the banks of the Yauza and Chermyanka rivers. In addition, they found traces of squirrels in the Sokolniki Natural and Historical Park, Dolgie Prudy Faunal Reserve, Severny Nature Reserve, Lianozovsky Landscape Reserve and Altufevsky Complex.
