Public Health Emergency in the ACT

A Public Health Emergency has been declared in the ACT for the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. See the COVID-19 website for more information.

Released 20/12/2020

Canberrans can count down to 2021 in style at their favourite local eat streets across Canberra, with three nights of music, lights and fabulous food from Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December.

New Year’s Eve across the City will create a celebratory atmosphere at a number of popular locations for three nights, including:

  • Lathlain Street in Belconnen
  • Anketell Street in Tuggeranong
  • Bradley Street in Woden
  • Hibberson Street in Gungahlin
  • Lonsdale Street in Braddon
  • Northbourne Avenue in the City

Each night, local performers and musicians will also be providing quality entertainment busker-style across each location from 5:30pm to 9:30pm.

While fireworks and a concert in the city will not form part of Canberra’s New Year’s Eve celebrations this year, colourful lights will instead shine bright on iconic Canberran attractions, including the Telstra Tower, Questacon, Royal Australian Mint, Belconnen Arts Centre, the Canberra Times Fountain and the National Carillion from 9pm to midnight each night.

A daily countdown to 2021 will also be projected on the clocktowers in Gungahlin and Tuggeranong town centres to help keep track of the final days of 2020.

This year is the perfect year to make plans at your favourite local restaurant, support local business, catch some great live performances and say ‘see ya later’ to 2020 in style.

New Year’s Eve across the City will be focused on keeping our community safe, while we support our local hospitality, arts and entertainment sectors.

By supporting one local business, you are supporting many more, including local producers, their suppliers and regional growers.

To avoid disappointment, book your celebratory meal at your favourite foodie street restaurants in advance.

If you are heading out this holiday season, make sure you download and use the Check In CBR app to help keep our community COVID-safe, and stay home if you are unwell.

Plan your New Year’s Eve feasting celebrations at events.act.gov.au/nye.
