Press Release

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr. (GA-02), Chairman of the U.S. House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies, released the following statement after receiving a briefing from FDA Commissioner Hahn and the Director of the Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Dr. Peter Marks, on the details of FDA‘s efforts so far to review and authorize vaccines to prevent COVID-19:

“I am very encouraged by the information I received from Commissioner Hahn and Dr. Marks about the two highly effective COVID-19 vaccines approved by the FDA. The Moderna vaccine seems to hold promise for rural areas that make up much of the 2nd Congressional District and our nation. Unlike the Pfizer vaccine, the Moderna vaccine can be stored in standard freezers for up to 30 days once it arrives at its destination. I am hopeful this will make it quicker for every American, regardless of their zip code, to receive a COVID-19 vaccine.

“The FDA has worked around the clock to apply its rigorous safety standards to authorize numerous diagnostic tests, therapeutics, and now vaccines. I am proud to be in a position to provide the FDA the funding it needs to continue this fight and ensure they have the necessary tools to review future vaccine applications so we can crush the virus, restart the economy, and put this pandemic behind us.”
