“Europe is not just the Single Market nor is it just an area of economic activity. Europe mainly concerns our safety and the way we will build our future, with respect for the fundamental European values of the rule of law, democracy and human rights”, stressed Alternate Minister of Foreign Affairs Miltiadis Varvitsiotis to his European counterparts today during his address at the informal meeting of the EU General Affairs Council.
The European Ministers’ talks, held via video conference, centred around preparing the Conference on the Future of Europe. In view of the Conference, the Alternate Minister congratulated the German Presidency for inviting all Western Balkan states, thus enlarging the conversation, and underlined the need to listen to the observations of the ‘Young Europe Ambassadors’, a group of youths from across Europe, with whom the Ministers exchanged views on the future of Europe, particularly in areas such as climate change, energy, asylum policy, democracy, health and digital transformation.
Finally, talks during the Council focused on the need for greater coordination among European governments in responding to the Covid-19 pandemic. In the same context, the Ministers acknowledged the timely progression of European procedures for the procurement of vaccines as a positive development.
