A landmark inquest yesterday recorded air pollution from traffic as a cause of death – today Caroline Russell AM challenged the Mayor over the fact that 99 per cent of Londoners still live in areas that bust World Health Organisation limits for micro particle pollution. 
Caroline warned the Mayor in 2017 that particulate pollution – that comes from tyre and road wear – would not be reduced by his plans and urged him to aim to cut traffic across London and make his Ultra Low Emission Zone city-wide. 
Despite there being virtually no reduction in particulate pollution – that causes strokes, heart disease, dementia and death since 2016, the Mayor has not backed away from his support for the urban motorway Silvertown Road Tunnel.
Speaking across the virtual chamber, Caroline reminded all elected members, at every level from the government down to councils of their need, to act quickly given the inquest findings, to act quickly to reduce exposure to pollution.
Caroline asked the Mayor to respond by bringing forward and strengthening his target for cutting road traffic which currently only requires a cut of 10 per cent by 2041. It was pollution from traffic that was linked yesterday to the avoidable death of Ella Adoo Kissi-Debrah.

Yesterday we heard the heart-breaking outcome results of the inquest into the death of nine-year old Ella Adoo Kissi-Debrah – she was killed by air pollution, mainly from traffic.
We also heard the Supreme Court’s disappointing decision to overturn a vital appeal blocking the third runway expansion at Heathrow.
The Government and the Mayor must hear us – the Londoners who live in this toxic air – now. We cannot afford to make progress in half measures, our lives are at stake.
How can the Mayor justify new road projects like Silvertown Road Tunnel while recognising the human cost of vehicle pollution in the tragic and avoidable death of Ella Adoo Kissi-Debrah.
The Mayor needs to cut traffic, it’s the main lever he has to cut particulate pollution. He must set an ambitious target to reduce the number of vehicles on our streets while making walking and cycling options safe and convenient so people have a realistic alternative to getting around.
