As Lord Mayor of Coventry, I would like to wish you all a very merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

We know it’s going to be a different Christmas to those we are used to, and that sometimes it is going to be tough.

Sadly, many in our city have lost loved ones to COVID this year and the festive season will be hard for them. Others will not be with family, and some are suffering financially as a result of the pandemic and its far-reaching effects. Our thoughts are with them.

Yet it is still Christmas, and its true meaning should shine through more than ever this year.

Christmas is a time for caring. It is a time when we reach out and let people know we are thinking of them.

That is something our city has done so well over the past year.

The Thursday night doorstep claps were so moving, as were the children’s drawings of rainbows in windows.

We have seen people’s generosity and their willingness to volunteer to protect the vulnerable; we have seen the bravery of frontine health and care staff and others who have  kept our city going; and we have seen how our city has reacted to fight this pandemic as one community.

It makes me so proud of my home.

This Christmas it would be easy to look at all we are missing – the hug of a loved one or the party with friends. Let us instead be happy that we are keeping them safe and look at all we have to celebrate, and there is still so much.

Maybe, this year, we can recognise that with a gift to a charity or a thank-you letter to that special person who has helped us through these past months. Yes, Christmas will be different, but we can make it special for ourselves and for others.

This Christmas, I will be giving thanks for my city and for the amazing people who have helped it through the past year and I will also be looking ahead to a bright and exciting 2021 when we can celebrate our year as UK City of Culture and everything Coventry has to offer, together.

Have a merry Christmas, stay safe, and my best wishes for a happy, healthy and peaceful 2021..

Lord Mayor of the City of Coventry
