Increase in turnover (+ 4.6%) and number of employees (+1.9%)

WIESBADEN – In 2019, companies in the energy, water and waste disposal industries with 20 or more employees made investments in property, plant and equipment (e.g. machines, land with buildings or tools) amounting to 21.7 billion euros. As the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) reports on the basis of preliminary data, this was an increase of 18.6% compared to 2018. This means that investments have increased for the third year in a row (2017: +5.3% and 2018: +16, 8th %). In 2019, sales of 645.4 billion euros were 4.6% higher than in 2018. In the same period, the number of employees rose by 1.9% to around 484,200.

With a volume of 13.6 billion euros, almost 63% of all investments in the energy, water and waste management industries were made in the electricity supply. Almost 12% of the total investment went into wastewater disposal and around 7% into water supply. The electricity supply also recorded the highest growth in investments compared to the previous year with an increase of 3.2 billion euros (+30.6%) and at the same time made a significant contribution to the growth in investments in the entire energy, water and waste disposal industry (+3.4 billion euros).

In 2019, the value of the investments made corresponded to 3.4% of sales (2018: 3.0%). The highest investments in relation to sales were in wastewater disposal (27.8%) and water supply (17.4%). In the electricity supply, on the other hand, the investment rate was below average at 2.7%.
